ABOUT AGRIVOLTAICS IN MAURITIUS

Everything you need to know before installing an agrivoltaic solution on your agricultural land.

1 What is the lifespan of an agrivoltaic installation?

Solar panels used in agrivoltaics have a lifespan of 30 to 40 years.

Galvanized steel structures are designed to last more than 25 years, even in windy and coastal areas of Mauritius.

2 What is the degradation rate of the panels?

Panels installed by Agrivoltaique are guaranteed with performance loss of less than 0.5% per year.

After 25 years, their efficiency remains above 87%.

3 Do the panels prevent light from reaching the crops?

No. The structures are specifically designed to allow useful radiation to pass through:

  • either through appropriate spacing between panels
  • or through the use of semi-transparent or adjustable panels

Partial shading is even beneficial for certain tropical crops.

4 Does this change the irrigation needs?

Yes, positively: the shade created limits water evaporation from the soil.

Irrigation needs can decrease by 15% to 30% depending on crops.

5 Can we continue farming normally?

Yes. This is one of the key principles of agrivoltaics.

The structures are designed to allow:

  • passage of agricultural machinery
  • manual work
  • free root development

6 Is the electricity produced stored?

In most cases in Mauritius:

  • without batteries → electricity is used directly (self-consumption)
  • or injected into the grid (SSDG or Net Metering)

Batteries can be added if the farm requires it.

7 What area is needed for a profitable agrivoltaic project?

  • Recommended minimum: 200 m²
  • Ideal: between 500 m² and 10,000 m²

Even small plots can generate interesting annual returns with an IRR above 12%.

8 How much electricity can be produced?

This depends on surface area, orientation and sunshine.

In Mauritius, we estimate on average:
